It can be argued that freestyle or freehand tattooing is in itself, a lack of preparation. Seems an easy argument to make it Freehand or tattoo stencils. It can also be said that pre-drawing your artwork meticulously, and applying your tattoo with a stencil, is more rigid, as well as less spontaneously artistic. Granted, I lean one way more than the other, so an argument from me is biased. My reasoning for this as a topic, is due to the frequency that it is discussed in our studio.

We have both types of artists… who are on opposite sides of said discussion. My typical set up (80% of the time) includes markers, but no stencil. I have to say, I feel free while I’m creating an image on someone. It’s a unique challenge to draw on a person with markers. Creating their idea, with your mind, on their body, is also uniquely rewarding to me. Spending that time creating on someone, instead of drawing ahead of time, definitely diminishes your tattoo time for the day though. I find I sacrifice some money to tattoo the way I love. Now, obviously I used stencils almost exclusively for years. It’s been a slow transition. There was a time when I thought that if I wasn’t preparing my stuff at home, or at least, far ahead of time, that I was failing my clients. That drawing, and redrawing on paper was KEY. Stressing getting every line weight, and consistency perfect. “CLEAN STENCIL” has been said so many times to me, I can’t count. Tracing body parts so the drawing fits the area properly… I BELIEVED it. For some things I definitely still do. I’m not one to freestyle a portrait or anything… I had a process.

Thought it pretty standard. Get references. Draw with light pencils on tracing paper. Built up to darker pencils and before your done, flip it over and look at it reversed. Make necessary changes. It’s amazing how many things you can find wrong, once you are looking at the reversed image! Always been thankful for being taught that trick. At some point though, for me, tattooing became somewhat like working in a factory.

I’m not degrading anybody’s work place by any means. It’s just not for me. Stick it on, color it in… Got a little boring to me. Tattoo Artist Dan Henk actually did only Kanji and tribal tattoos for almost two years but to become a successful tattoo artist you gotta do what you gotta do. If I had a traditional or illustrative style, I might still be doing it that way. In some form, people who draw tattoos with markers, are very much adhering to the same drawing routine. Most would build up their drawing, light to dark, make a stencil, and then get to the real work. Personally I did 3-4 revisions of any drawing. It is the same directly on a person. Get references, go light to dark, build your artwork, get your clean lines, and go to work.

Granted you can’t reverse the drawing when it’s directly on them, but there’s a real good chance it fits the body well… All of that being said,I have heard, and been a part of this discussion from both sides… having been one, and now the other. It’s only my opinion, but ultimately, if you are creating a tattoo for somebody in the most comfortable, enjoyable way you can, while at the same time, giving them a quality tattoo, you are doing it correctly. I for one, support people making KILLER tattoos. No matter how they do it…
